Whale Rider
Beautiful ocean landscapes and a mythical story combine in this
tale based on the fictional novel by Wita Ihimaera. It's the story of a young girl who dreams of becoming the chief of her tribe,
the Maori in New Zealand. That's a role traditionally reserved
for males but Pai, a 13-year-old girl, feels destined in part
because the person who would normally ascend to the role, her twin
brother, died at childbirth. However, Pai's grandfather, who is the current chief, is extremely traditional and opposes allowing Pai
to even learn about being a chief. Pai, played by Keisha
Castle-Hughes, does have two family members on her side, though,
in her grandmother and an uncle. The traditional costumes, language,
chants, and personality of the Maori are part of this story as
well as some breathtaking underwater whale photography.
This is a story that teens and adults can enjoy.
Starring: Vicky Haughton, Rawiri Paratene, Keisha Castle-Hughes,
Cliff Curtis, Grant Roa and Mana Tauma.
